    Is it possible that FluMist®, the nasal spary flu vaccine, may be causing the flu?  The major media outlets are escalating the push for the flu shot to near hysteria, especially since the CDC announced that the flu vaccines “may” provide some protection against the A/Fujian strain. With the supply of flu vaccine running out, there is now new media-produced promotion for FluMist, the nasal spray flu vaccine. However, what is not being explored is the possibility that cases of flu may be caused by FluMist. An overview of the CDC’s most recently available data regarding flu virus testing brings this question to the forefront.

    How drug firms 'hoodwink' medical journals  In February the New England Journal of Medicine was forced to retract an article published last year by doctors from Imperial College in London and the National Heart Institute on treating a type of heart problem. It emerged that several of the listed authors had little or nothing to do with the research. The deception was revealed only when German cardiologist Dr Hubert Seggewiss, one of the eight listed authors, called the editor of the journal to say he had never seen any version of the paper.

    Drug Companies Collect Secret Reports on Doctors While most physicians are aware that drug companies collect some information about which medications they prescribe, most do not realize how detailed the information actually is. Drug makers spend millions of dollars to develop secret reports about doctors and their patients, including information such as whether a patient is switched over to a competitor’s drug and whether the doctor treats many poor patients and may want free samples.  Pharmaceutical companies spent $19 billion on marketing in 2001, and $16 billion of it was spent on marketing to doctors. Many doctors are seeing fewer drug sales representatives and limiting their visits when they do, so the reports, or “prescriber profiles,” allow sales reps to tailor their pitches to individual physicians.
