KIDS AND CHEMICALS, A SPECIAL REPORT ON NOW WITH BILL MOYERS TRACKS THE SCIENTIFIC SEARCH FOR ANSWERS ABOUT HOW ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS AFFECT AMERICA'S CHILDREN - Kids and Chemicals, a special edition of NOW with Bill Moyers features medical investigators and health officials engaged in the latest research on links between childhood illness and environmental contamination. The program looks at families around the country who are coping with the consequences to their children of potentially toxic exposures. "The disturbing increases in childhood illness in America cannot be ignored," says Bill Moyers. "How does the exposure affect children's health? The new research is studying how chemicals enter the human body, and posing questions that they could never ask before: Do chemicals affect children, babies and unborn fetuses more than adults? What factors increase toxicity, and how can we protect children from harm?" KIDS AND CHEMICALS, a special report on NOW With Bill Moyers, premieres Friday, May 10, at 9:00 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings).
"The drugging of children has gotten so out of hand that America is waking up to this. This is a national catastrophe. I'm seeing children who are normal who are on five psychiatric drugs." Peter R. Breggin, M.D. Director, International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology"In 1996 the World Health Organization warned that Ritalin over-use has reached dangerous proportions. Hopefully, by being armed with correct information, you may be able to avoid using Ritalin or other similar medications. Use of these drugs on a long-term basis is questionable. Safety of such long-term use is simply unknown, but many dangerous side effects have been increasingly. Ritalin, for instance, may provoke seizures and suppress growth, or it may cause angina, blood pressure changes, depression or any of a very long list of serious side effects."Dr. Allen Buresz Learn about safe & effective alternatives to Ritalin and other drugs for ADD and ADHD
Beware of the of Soy Products
Considering all of soy's health benefits, it is tempting for new and expectant mothers to see soy-based infant formula as a "miracle food" and to stock their pantries sky-high with the stuff. Well, hold on there mama. That most vulnerable member of the population, an infant unable to breastfeed, stands at great risk of developing a serious thyroid disorder due to a diet based entirely on soy formula. That disorder is hypothyroidism, or an under-active thyroid and it is a common cause of fatigue, depression, obesity, constipation, extreme sensitivity to cold and a number of other symptoms, most so common that the disorder can go undiagnosed for years.Scientists have known for years that the isoflavones in soy products can depress thyroid function and cause goiters in otherwise healthy children and adults. A combined research team of Cornell University Medical College and Long Island Community Hospital medical experts have found that children who develop Type1 diabetes are twice as likely to have been fed soy formulas as those fed all other foods This confirms concerns based on animal studies raised in the 1980's and 1990s by Health Canada researcher Dr Fraser Scott and led to the American Academy of Pediatrics issuing their warning to pediatricians against any use of soy based formulas. In Switzerland, England, Australia and New Zealand, public health officials recommend highly restricted medically monitored use of soy for babies and for pregnant women.

Medicinal Clay Treatment Excerpt from Wild Health: How Animals Keep Themselves Well and What We Can Learn From Them by Cindy EngelHuman beings are too much like animals in captivity in the way we have limited our own healthcare strategies. Like Native Americans, we should observe animal behaviour as the first step to achieving sustainable healthcare.
Dirt as Medicine "Many species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and even insects, in all parts of the world, eat dirt. Known as geophagy (earth-eating) this habit has long been assumed to be an attempt to rectify mineral deficiciencies in their diet. However new evidence suggests that this cannot always be the case. It has become apparent that the clay content is often the most important ingredient of selected soils. Clay is an effective binding agent as its chemical structure allows other chemicals to bond with it and so lose their reactivity. Clay is therefore an effective deactivator of toxins from diet or pathogens.
Why would animals want to lick clay? Bill Roundy is a retired rancher. He remembers a generation ago, when he lived in Utah, that he and other cattle ranchers, learnt a valuable lesson by watching their cattle. Whenever a cow got sick and went off her food, the ranchers would turn her out to fend for herself, as they could not afford to throw good money after bad. But, they noticed that, time and time again, the cows would return after a few days, fully recovered, and ready to feed with the rest of the herd. It wasn't long before these ranchers discovered how the cows were recovering. The sickly cattle would take themselves across the desert to clay banks, and feed on them until their health returned. When the ranchers saw how easy and cheap was the solution, they transported clay to their sick cows - a practice still continued today. Free-ranging cattle dig into ancient clay sub soils to access clay and so have no need to be supplemented in this way
Cindy Engel concludes that human beings are too much like animals in captivity in the way we have limited our own healthcare strategies. Like Native Americans, she advocates, we should observe animal behaviour as the first step to achieving sustainable healthcare. Everyone should read this book! It's truly revolutionary and fascinating. It will change the way you think about animals and yourself. The things animals do to stay healthy are mind-boggling, and Dr. Engel is always careful to say what is scientifically proven and what isn't. I've always been suspicious of alternative medicine, but it opened my eyes. There are incredible lessons here for human health as well as animal health, and the book isn't heavy lifting at all. Learn about medicinal clay treatment for humansBiologists in Canada and Alaska have seen brown bears lick clay from banks alongside footpaths. At the same time, their scats are full of clay. In Venezuela free-ranging cattle dig and lick at clay subsoils. In Africa, the African buffalo licks clay from any newly exposed subsoil. Chimpanzees, giraffes, and rhinoceroses eat regular mouthfuls of clay-rich termite mound soil and gorillas mine clay-rich volcanic rock from under the exposed roots of ancient trees. Deep in the rain forests of New Guinea, Jared Diamond was surprised to see parrots, pigeons and crows fly down to a new landslide of earth and eat the bare dirt. The birds flocked to this rare opportunity to access bare earth in an area densely covered with vegetation. Not all of the observed 140 bird species came down to eat earth. Only the eight herbivorous species that regularly ate fruit, seeds and flowers. Plants naturally contain numerous toxins that protect them from predators and pathogens. When the landslide soils were analysed they were found to contain less minerals than the surrounding top soil but again the clay content was high and, what is more, found to be more effective at binding alkaloids and tannins than pure pharmaceutical kaolinite. These birds were taking advantage of newly disturbed earth and selecting soil of just the right properties to bind and deactivate plant toxins [Diamond,J 1998 Eat Dirt: in the competition between parrots and fruit trees, it's the winners who bite the dust. Discover. 19(2) pp70-76.]. Rats eat soil when sick - so reliably that geophagy is used as an indicator of gastrointestinal malaise in rats."
Immune System: The body's defense department
According t o Dr. George C Pack, MD, a cancer specialist at Cornell medical School, almost everyone has cancer cells present at times in our bodies. If our immune system is working properly, these cells are killed or reabsorbed by our defense system before they begin to grow and threaten our health. The only real defense against cancer is the immune system. Everyone gets cancer every day but if the immune system is where it should be those cancer cells are eliminated and we never know it.Maintaining strong immune defenses in today's world is not easy. Daily exposure to environmental pollutants, the emotional and excessive stresses of modern lifestyles, chemicalized foods, and new virus mutations are all a challenge to our immune systems. Devastating, immune compromised diseases are rising all over the world. Reduced immunity is the main factor in opportunistic diseases, like candida albicans, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, HIV, hepatitis, mononucleosis, herpes II, sexually transmitted diseases and cancer. These diseases have become the epidemic of our time, and most of us don't have very much to fight with. An overload of antibiotics, antacids, immunizations, cortico-steroid drugs, and environmental pollutants eventually affect immune system balance to the point where it cannot distinguish harmful cells from healthy cells."
Transfer Factor: "There is no other product in a nutritional substance, nor a drug, that has this kind of power and ability to affect our immune system. With the increase of killer viruses, mutated germs, super-resistant germs, and food contaminations, our only hope and defense, must lie within our own immune system." Darryl See, MD
Pet Formulations - Transfer Factor is also available in Pet Formulations for cats, dogs, horses and other animals. According to veterinarians, the powerful and proprietary blend of ingredients work together to activate and enhance the immune system's ability to respond to the many pathogens may pets come into contact with.
Bee Pollen and Weight Control excerpt from Dr. Mercola's article
Pollen is the male seed of flowers. It is required for the fertilization of the plant. The tiny particles consist of 50/1,000-millimeter corpuscles, formed at the free end of the stamen in the heart of the blossom. Every variety of flower in the universe puts forth a dusting of pollen. Many orchard fruits and agricultural food crops do, too. Bee pollen is the food of the young bee and it is approximately 40% protein. It is considered one of nature's most completely nourishing foods.Bee pollen works wonders in a weight-control or weight-stabilization regimen by correcting a possible chemical imbalance in body metabolism that may be involved in either abnormal weight gain or loss. The normalizing and stabilizing effects of this perfect food from the bees are phenomenal. In weight-loss programs, bee pollen stimulates the metabolic processes. It speeds caloric burn by lighting and stoking the metabolic fires. Honeybee pollen is coming to be recognized as Nature's true weight-loss food. Bee pollen is a low-calorie food. It contains only ninety calories per ounce. (An ounce is about two heaping tablespoons.) It offers 15 percent lecithin by volume. Lecithin is a substance that helps dissolve and flush fat from the body. This is one reason why bee pollen lowers low-density lipoproteins (LDL) surer and faster than any other food while helping increase the helpful high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which science says protect against cholesterol and heart disease.
By boosting the value of each nutrient present in the food you eat, bee pollen also eliminates cravings. Its natural phenylalanine content acts as an appetite suppressant. Phenylalanine is a natural amino acid that the body requires. It acts on your appestat, the control center that signals fullness and hunger. Mother Nature knows what she's about. You just plain won't want to eat as much when you take bee pollen regularly. When you are overweight, phenylalanine exerts a natural appetite suppressant effect. When you need to gain weight, the phenylalanine in bee pollen works in reverse.
The chemical drug in over-the-counter weight-loss products is a manmade cousin of phenylalanine called phenylpropanolamine, which chemically depresses the appetite whether you are fat, thin, or just right. It can also give you the jitters and leave you with a drug-induced "hangover" and can be addictive. Phenylpropanolamine is a common ingredient in many decongestants, explaining why one of the side effects of these products is loss of appetite. Products that include phenylpropanolamine as an ingredient must by law carry a warning that they should not be taken by persons with certain conditions, including thyroid problems and high blood pressure.

Beware of imported bee pollen: Virtually all of the major U.S. manufacturers of Bee Pollen have switched from selling domestic U.S. Bee Pollen to inexpensive imported pollen from China and Spain. These pollen are often heat processed and dehydrated to facilitate easy storage and increased shelf life. Unfortunately, heat destroys the bioactivity of nutrients and enzymes which are an important component of Bee Pollen. Granules of fresh bee pollen are semi-moist. When you buy Bee Pollen it is important to refrigerate the product. The Natural Shopper's beehive's products are processed naturally. They do not use heat, rather a lyophilizing process that retains nutritional integrity and keeps some moisture present.
